In addition to a meeting of the Board of Directors, there will be a General Meeting for all members and interested parties. A section of the meeting will be set aside for presentations of recent research and interesting finds.

Following a long tradition, members will gather for dinner at an area restaurant on Friday evening. On Saturday evening members are encouraged to attend the awards banquet to cheer on UNP exhibitors.

UNP members are asked to participate in the exhibition. Exhibits will vie for UNP Gold, Silver and Bronze medals. The UNP President's Award will be presented to the best UN and related area exhibit by a UNP member.

It may seem like a long way off, but the time will fly by. Start making plans to attend the convention and enjoy the company of fellow members. As the date draws nearer, look to this website and The Journal for more details.

  • February 20th, 2007 - President's Message

The 2007 convention of the United Nations Philatelists was a most enjoyable event. Hosted by SANDICAL, the World Series of Philately show in San Diego, the weather was warm and the venue relaxing. Those who attended were treated to a special weekend, indeed.

On Thursday night UNP members were invited to join the SANDICAL staff, exhibitors and others at a local Chinese restaurant for a kick-off dinner. The food just kept coming and coming! Friday night, the UNP crowd enjoyed dinner at a wonderful Italian restaurant.

Saturday started early as the UNP Board meeting was scheduled for 9:00 AM. It was a productive meeting and your Board passed a number of measures that will benefit the organization. I am particularly pleased to announce that we have a new webmaster, Larry Fillion, who has already started to redesign and update our website. The revised website may already be up by the time this issue arrives in your mail box. Take a few moments and check out www.unpi.com. I invite you to join me in thanking Dennis Hamilton, who served UNPI in this capacity, setting up and maintaining the website for several years. The full minutes of the Board are published elsewhere in this issue. I urge you all to read them.

The Board meeting was followed by the general meeting, where we were treated to several interesting and informative presentations. There was a meager turnout, but for those who missed it, the session was taped and will be available on our website.

There were 33 frames of UN, League and related exhibits on display. Thanks to Fran Adams, the SANDICAL committee, and Anita (page we had the opportunity to view Jack (page's stunning exhibit "The Chagall Window" one last time. Fran had expanded the exhibit to 7 frames as Jack had planned, but did not get to implement. Jack's exhibit was shown in the Court of Honor.

There were seven exhibits in competition provided by UNP members. Greg Galletti debuted his new exhibit on the History of the United Nations as shown through covers. Greg was rewarded with a Vermeil medal and a UNP Gold medal. Christopher Dahle, who was not a UNP member, showed "The Universal Declaration of Human Rights." His exhibit received a Bronze medal and a UNP Bronze medal. We also awarded Chris a 1-year membership in UNP. Welcome, Chris! See the table below to this note which lists all UNP exhibits and their awards.

The UNP received a very pleasant surprise at the awards banquet on Saturday night. The SANDICAL committee used the image of the United Nations souvenir sheet depicting the Chagall Window for its awards, honoring both Jack (page and the UNP, and in keeping with the show theme of "International Philately." One of the award plaques is shown nearby.

Our next convention will be held August 14-17, 2008 in conjunction with APS STAMPSHOW in Hartford, Connecticut. Start making plans to attend now and start getting your exhibits ready. I'll see you there!
